The Vodafone Derby Stakes is run at Epsom Downs over 1 mile and a half and 10 yards (12 furlongs and 10 yards). It is for 3 year old colts (excluding geldings) and fillies, although it is rare for fillies to run, and even rarer for them to win. Only 6 fillies have ever won the derby, with the last female victor coming in 1916. It was first run on May 4th 1780, and it is one of the 5 British Classic Races and the second leg of the English Triple Crown (along with the 2000 guineas and the St Leger). The Derby Stakes is a Group 1 flat race.
The first 4 runnings of the derby were over 1 mile, which was then amended to 1 mile and 4 furlongs. The race was moved to Newmarket for the races in 1915, 1916, 1917 and 1918, before moving back to Epsom. In 1991 the official race measurement was increased from 1 mile and 4 furlongs to 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 10 yards.
There are many betting opportunities for the Vodafone Derby Stakes including Win, Each Way or Forecast Bets. Many bookmakers also pay out on first past the post, as well as any winner that may come about as a result of a Steward's enquiry.
