The 2000 Guineas is run at Newmarket on the Suffolk/Cambridgeshire border over 1 mile. It is for 3 year old thoroughbreds, excluding geldings, and takes it's name from the original guaranteed prize fund that was on offer. It was first run on April 18th 1809, and it is one of the 5 British Classic Races. 1 Guinea is £1 1s (equivalent to £1.05). This race predominantly features male horses. Female horse are eligible to take part, but rarely do nowadays.
There are many betting opportunities for the 2000 guineas, including Win, Each Way or Forecast Bets. Many bookmakers also pay out on first past the post, as well as any winner that may come about as a result of a Steward's enquiry.
