The 1000 Guineas is run at Newmarket on the Suffolk/Cambridgeshire border over 1 mile. It is for 3 year old fillies (female horses) and takes it's name from the original guaranteed prize fund that was on offer. It was first run on April 28th 1814, and it is one of the 5 British Classic Races. 1 Guinea is £1 1s (equivalent to £1.05).
There are many betting opportunities for the 1000 guineas, including Win, Each Way or Forecast Bets. Many bookmakers also pay out on first past the post, as well as any winner that may come about as a result of a Steward's enquiry.
